NEWS FROM THE STUDIO

Picture
My garden studio was built in 2016 after I left teaching and had the opportunity to focus on my own artwork. Located at the top of our steep garden with floor to ceiling windows on three sides, it is filled with light and offers fantastic views.

If I’m working in the studio there’s no set routine. I have an inbuilt discipline and will paint as long as there’s daylight. Anything from a few hours to a full day until the light goes. In summer I work through till 8pm with a break for lunch and Radio 4 for company.

I love being there seeing the changes of colour each season brings. I’m obsessed with the trees and views which are a continuing source of inspiration. Colour is hugely important to me. The first thing I do when I’m in the studio is mix a palette of colours to use.

There are no distractions in the studio. It’s somewhere where I can completely lose myself in what I’m doing; my own zone where I can just ‘be’. Painting gives me a sense of freedom, wellbeing and contentment as well as excitement.

If I’m very busy with other things and can’t get in to paint, I feel very edgy and twitchy because the draw is so great. So my priority is to carve out that time.

As the days get shorter, I like to get started as early as possible. Good heating and lighting enable me to work there throughout the winter. We bought the house primarily for the garden. Having my own studio is a huge bonus which I’m so grateful for. It’s pure joy!
